The Qualifying Exams

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) require you to take and pass all of the following three 3 parts in order and you must complete all 3 parts within 2 years of passing part 1.

ADI Part 1

This is a theory test comprising 2 elements:

     > 100 multiple choice questions based on all subjects related to driving a car and the instruction of others.

        > A computer based hazard perception test which contains 14 separate clips of hazard scenarios.

The DSA allows you as many attempts to pass this part as necessary.

ADI Part 2

A practical test of your driving ability, including an eyesight test. It is conducted from a driving test centre and lasts about one hour.  The standard required is of an advanced nature and the test route includes urban and rural roads,  motorways and dual carriageways.

The DSA allows you to have up to 3 attempts to pass this test.

ADI Part 3

This is a practical test of your ability to instruct, conducted from a driving test centre.  It lasts for about one hour and is split into 2 parts.  The examiner plays the part of a learner driver at a different level of ability in each part.  You will be assessed on the value of the instruction you give. You must gain a pass in both parts.

The DSA allow you to have up to 3 attempts to pass this test.

A complete re-sit of all the exams is then required after a lapse of 2 years before the part 3 can be re-taken.

Skills are assessed in three main areas:-

1. Core Competences

Fault Identification / Analysis / Remedial Action

2. Instructional Techniques

Level / Planning / Control of lesson / Question/Answer / Feedback & Encouragement / Use of dual controls

3. Instructor Characteristics

Articulate / Enthusiastic / Encouraging / Friendly / Patient / Confident

In - car training is given by an experienced qualified tutor who specialises in training Instructors for the Part 3 exam. He has a complete understanding of both the manner in which the Part 3 pre – set tests are conducted, and the way each of the twenty individual topics that comprise the “Programme of Training for Licensed Trainee Driving Instructors” are to be presented by the trainee Instructor.

As the test is split into two distinct separate parts each of half an hours’ duration, the length of a briefing and its content needs to be very carefully controlled so as not to over run the allotted time. This may mean that an Instructor under test conditions may need to adjust their normal briefing time if they are to demonstrate their full knowledge of the subject and how to present it.

Number of Lessons?

This will obviously depend on the ability of a trainee but experience shows that AT LEAST 25 one-hour lessons are required to cover each of the 20 items on the programme, including an extra 5 hours of 'dress rehearsal' tests.

Extra hours of tuition will required should you wish to instruct under the trainee 'pink' licence scheme.

Under the DSA rules for this scheme, the trainee has to either have 20 hours certified extra training, when Form ADI 21 AT has to be completed and sent to the DSA within 3 months of commencing the licence.

Or

Be supervised by an Approved Driving Instructor for 20% of the time they give lessons. Form ADI 21S has to be completed by the supervising ADI and yourself and returned to the DSA as soon as the licence expires.

Who can become a driving instructor?

If you want to apply to be in the ADI Register you must hold a full UK or European Union (EU)/European Economic Area (EEA) unrestricted car driving licence and have held it for a total of at least four out of the past six years prior to entering the Register after qualifying

A foreign driving licence, an automatic car driving licence or a provisional licence held after passing the driving test allcount towards the four years.
